The Art Of Kantha

To make our Shivani Quilt, the softest organic cotton is dyed by hand to match our precise colour specifications. Once dyed, these panels are then cut, pinned and sewn together and finally quilted by hand using an age old technique called kantha stitching.

Kantha is an ancient form of hand-stitch embroidery originating in India. The running stitch gives the cloth a wrinkly appearance which is characteristic of kantha quilts. It is a craft that is practised mostly by women and through the years has helped women in India secure a livelihood through stitching.

At our production hub in Jaipur, a group of women from the surrounding area have been trained under the masterful eye of pattern master Lalkishar Ji. Working together in groups of four, they rotate in pairs - producing our quilts one kantha stitch at a time.
