Rattan, Vintage Indigo

£2.28

Emma’s eye is always scanning, looking for detail. It was the intricate pattern found on a rattan chair that inspired this lattice design. Block printed by hand in Sanganer, a district on the outskirts of the city, by master printer Sultan Ji and his apprentices.

Process

Once the fabric is pinned onto the printing table and the colours are mixed, the meticulous process of block printing begins.

Our Rattan design is printed using one block which is carved by hand, not far from the block printing workshop. Beginning at one end of the printing table, the block is dipped into a colour and then pressed firmly into the fabric. This process is repeated over and over until they reach the other end of the printing table. Once dry enough to handle, the fabric length is un-pinned and hung above the table to dry.

From Furniture to Fabric

Emma is forever looking for detail in the ordinary. A rattan chair and a quick sketch on the go in the Pink City inspired this new design.

The Man Himself

This is Sultan Ji, our master printer. Sultan started block printing in 1971 after being inspired by his elder brothers to learn the craft. He explained to us that at the time block printing was a good paying job and to this day, continues to honour the maker through fair wages. Sultan feels incredibly proud to have passed on the legacy to his sons, who now work alongside him in the workshop. He feels passionately about passing these traditional skills onto the next generation. To him, it is an invaluable technique, one that is like no other.
