Old City Small, Illusion Blue

£3.44

A small scale stripe inspired by architectural details found within the Old City in Jaipur. Block printed by hand in Sanganer, a district on the outskirts of the city, by master printer Sultan Ji and his apprentices.

In this colour-way, we’ve created our bold block printed stripe using red and pink on mid-weight organic linen in illusion blue.

Process

Once the fabric is pinned onto the printing table the meticulous process begins by measuring out the repeat using string pulled tight between pins. Doing so enables the artisans to print in a straight line… nobody wants squiffy stripes, especially not Sultan Ji, who has an impeccable eye for detail.

Our Old City design is made up of two wooden blocks, which have been carved by hand. Beginning at one end of the printing table, the first block is dipped into a colour and then pressed firmly into the fabric. This process is repeated over and over until they reach the other end of the printing table. Once dry enough to handle, another artisan follows behind applying the second block atop of the first.

Mixing colour in Sanganer.

Sultan Ji On Colour

Sultan Ji is a master of his craft and when it comes to mixing colour, he believes it’s best achieved by eye and by hand.

He has a sense of colour that’s been forged over time and chooses not to write formulas down. In Sultan’s opinion, relying on recipes, listening to music and watching TV all dumb the mind. He works in silence and relies on years of practice to keep his mind sharp and get his colours just right.

Naveen

Some things are best kept in the family. Naveen is Sultan Ji’s daughter-in-law’s brother.

Naveen has only been block printing for three years and is now one of Sultan Ji’s best printers.
